MÓNACO

Last year I decided to go “head over heels” and I went to Monaco to see UEFA Super Cup since my team (FCPorto) won the UEFA Cup and played against Barcelona… Even though, the game was lost from the beginning it was a great excuse for the journey… I challenged a friend and we went… on a road trip from Milan to Monaco… in 3 days… :)
Here’s what I thought of the 2 days in Monaco :)
The highlights were the Montecarlo tunnel, remembering the Formula 1; the Grimaldi Palace and the surrender of the Guard; the Cathedral and the views we had; the Montecarlo Casino, of course!! :):)

It’s a glamorous state that you can easily visit in 2 days (a good place for a city break).
Here are a few photos we took… Hope you like it!
Next… Milan! ;)
XOXO

A seguir... Milão! ;)
XOXO

SINTRA

Today I’m going to show you another great place my country has to offer, Sintra!
If you travel to Portugal I advise you to find the time to visit this village… It has a lot for you to enjoy :)
There are 3 spots that I will talk more but there is more…

TOP 3 – CASTELO DOS MOUROS / CASTLE OF THE MOORS

It is a hilltop medieval castle in the Sintra Mountains. It was constructed during the 8th and 9th Century when the Arabian occupied the Iberian Peninsula and returned to the Christians when Afonso Henriques (Portugal first king) conquest Lisbon.
It has some amazing views due to its placement.

It is a Romanticist Palace built 30 years before Neuschwantein (already shown here), being the first of its genre.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal since 2007.
It has a park surrounding it (huge) with gardens, caves, bridges, fountains, that allow you some great walks.

This was the last place I discovered in Sintra and I must confess it was a wonderful surprise!
I loved Palácio da Pena… It was my top in Sintra until I found this place.
It is an estate that has a palace and a park with several (let’s call them) surprises… with lakes, caves, fountains, mazes and amazing sweet constructions… and always a small adventure for the courageous ones… :)
I totally encourage you to go there and try all the mazes, the caves… and see what you can find!

2 years ago I decided to have some different holidays, that allowed me to get to know several places at the same time… no, it was not an interrail, it was a cruise! And I simply loved it… for real (so much that since then I’ve done 3 :$)!
One of the cities I visited in my second cruise was Messina. We arrived to the Port of Messina early morning and we chose to visit the city on our own.
We left the boat and started walking towards the city that did not seem far (and it was not). Once there we looked for a tourism office and that’s when the adventure began… you cannot imagine how hard it is to find a tourism office (I could not imagine either). We have signs in one side of the road and we try to follow them… but when we ask in a coffee cause we were not able to find anything where the sign was indicating they tell us it’s on the opposite side of the avenue (and opposite side of the sign)… On the 2nd floor of a building (no indication, once again only found it because we asked)…
Finally on the tourism office, they only spoke Italian… yes, you can laugh… but with a little bit of Portuguese mixed with Italian we managed to get the map so we could get to the Cathedral on time to see the clock – noon.
With the map (that we got with a lot of effort :P) in our hands we were finally able to arrive to the touristic spot of the town: Messina Cathedral, just in time for the performance by mechanically animated statues telling the core facts of civil and religious history of Messina on the clock at noon!
Also the cathedral has the largest astronomical clock in the world.
It was worth the wait! Here are my records from the highlight of Messina!

SALZBURG

Salzburg is another town that deserves a visit.
I went there when I was in Munich and spent there a weekend (by train is less than 2 hours and not that expensive if you buy a Bayer ticket) and we had a blast!
Once you arrive in the city it’s impossible not to know that you are in Mozart town… You have indications to the house where he was born, where he lived, where… you got the point… lots of history…
“Sound of the Music” was partly filmed here and those spots can also be visited.
From the Hohensalzburg Castle you get some of the best views to the Austian surroundings and they are amazing.
In the surroundings of Salzburg (reachable by bus) we can find Hellbrunn Palace. It’s a castle with no bedrooms, used as day residence and well known by the “watergames” in the grounds... It is worth the visit… You cannot imagine what they have imagined without being there!
Have fun! ;)

BRAGA, Bracara Augusta

Today I will take you for a quick visit to Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga.
It’s been some years since I’ve been there for the last time as a tourist. I remember we went there to show some work friends F. (from Romenia) and B. (from Turkey) one of the nicest places we had nearby Porto.
It was a nice day we spent in Braga where the most important stop was with no doubt Bom Jesus. Of course, I also recommend a walk in the center of Braga.
I leave you with a few photos from what I consider the most important spot in Braga...

What do you think?

NEUCHWANSTEIN

As promised on the latest post… here I am to give you a little bit more of Neuchwanstein…
Do you know the Sleeping Beauty Princess and her Castle? This is the real castle that inspired the Disney one and it’s and hour away from Munich more or less… so if you are travelling here I most definitely would tell you to save one day and take the chance and visit it!! It’s beautiful… I went there in the Winter with snow… and the views were breathtaking!!!

DACHAU – Arbeit Macht Frei

As promised here you have some info on Dachau!
Dachau Concentration Camp was built in 1933 as a model for all the others that came after… yes, it may not have the mass murder as Auschwitz but knowing it existed all those years before the War… for me it is shocking…
The entrance gate to this concentration camp, as many others, carries the words "Arbeit Macht Frei", meaning "work liberates"…
Being in Munich and having some interest in history… not that distant… and some cold blood… is a visit I recommend!

Here you have some pics from my visit there for you to get an idea… I am now curious (call it morbid) in visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau after this one… what about you?
